Project Goal

To devise and test novel approaches to steelhead restoration including reconditioning post-spawn steelhead to take advantage of their ability to spawn multiple times.

Impacts

Increasing steelhead abundance could reduce constraints on the Zone 6 fall Chinook fishery.

Background

We are also trying to understand the biology of reconditioning in kelt steelhead. By developing and applying physiological indices based on the endocrinology of growth, stress, and reproduction in fish, we aim to achieve a detailed understanding of the physiology of reconditioning. This knowledge will provide a scientific basis for maximizing the success of kelt reconditioning programs.

Project Tasks

  1. Test to evaluate the reproductive success of artificially reconditioned kelt steelhead.
  2. Evaluate survival and migration characteristics of artificially reconditioned kelt steelhead.
  3. Evaluate different reconditioning strategies spanning from low to high intensity.
  4. Attempt to meet BiOp goal of increasing B-run steelhead return survival by 6%.
