Four tribal elders, two civic leaders, and one persevering scientist
are recipients of the 2006 Spirit of the Salmon Fund awards announced
today by the Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission (CRITFC).
The awardees will be honored at the 6th annual Wy-Kan-Ush-Pum ("Salmon
People”) gala on Saturday, May 13th. The gala celebration
honors the work of CRITFC, its member tribes, and environmental
conservation friends and partners.
"We welcome all of those who work and support environmental
issues – especially salmon restoration and protection. As
this event grows, I feel the spirit of Wy-Kan-Ush-Pum is truly being
realized," says Olney Patt Jr., CRITFC executive director.
The 2006 Spirit of the Salmon Fund Awardees are:
Partnership Award
For outstanding efforts to create rich partnerships in the pursuit
of salmon restoration.
Native American Youth and Family Association (NAYA)
Wy·Kan·Ush Award
For laboring tenaciously and resolutely against the current
to ensure the survival of salmon for future generations.
Michele DeHart – Director, The Fish Passage
Center
Leadership Award
For providing leadership while making progress and overcoming
insurmountable obstacles that would bar the way to one less bold.
Tom Hampson
Director, ONABEN: A Native American Business Network
Hall of Fame Award
For exceptional commitment to put fish back in the rivers and
protect the watersheds where they live
Nathan “8-Ball” Jim, awarded posthumously,

Elmer Crow, Jr. (Nez Perce)
Alphonse Halfmoon (Umatilla)
Roger Dick, Jr. (Yakama)
This years awardees join the ranks of past honorees
that include: Billy Frank, Jr. Carol Craig (Yakama), Antone Minthorn
(Umatilla), Patricia Zell (Senate Committee on Indian Affairs),
and other highly esteemed individuals.
The 6th Annual Wy-Kan-Ush-Pum Gala will take place
at the Downtown Waterfront Marriot in Portland, Oregon. Tickets

the Spirit of the Salmon Fund’s ongoing Columbia River salmon
