survey set for The Dalles Reservoir
Portland, Oregon
- The Columbia River
Inter-Tribal Fish Commission (CRITFC), in cooperation with the Yakama
Nation, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and Washington Department
of Fish and Wildlife, will launch a white sturgeon population survey
in The Dalles Reservoir.
Tribal researchers will begin tagging white sturgeon the week of Dec.
6, 2004, continuing through February 2005. State agencies will resume
tagging in late spring and continue through next summer.
The population estimate will help tribal and state staff manage The
Dalles Reservoir’s white sturgeon population while allowing
for sustainable growth.
Fisheries technicians from the Yakama Nation Fisheries Department
and contract tribal fishers will perform the survey from tribal commercial
fishing vessels using clearly labeled and identifiable fishing gear.
All sanctuaries for white sturgeon will be observed and all fish captured
will be returned to the reservoir.
Tribal and state agencies ask the public’s cooperation in not
disturbing research gear. Concerned persons should contact CRITFC
project leaders Kevin Kappenman or Blaine Parker at (503) 238-0667.
