Tribal fisheries co-managers to gather at symposium

Portland, Oregon - Tribal fisheries co-managers from across the nation will meet in Portland next month for a two-day symposium to discuss their ongoing research, policy development and management programs, and share success stories.

The Tribal Fisheries Co-Management Symposium & Legislative Work Session, co-sponsored by the Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission (CRITFC) and the Institute for Tribal Government at Portland State University's Hatfield School of Government, is 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31 at PSU's Smith Center.

Invited speakers: U.S. Sens. Daniel K. Inouye of Hawaii and Ben Nighthorse Campbell of Colorado; Congressmen Dale E. Kildee of Michigan and J.D. Hayworth of Arizona, former Oregon Congresswoman Elizabeth Furse, and Billy Frank Jr., Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission chairman.

Open to the general public, the symposium's first day will showcase the history, organization, authority and issues of CRITFC and other inter-tribal organizations dedicated to fisheries management. Responding to a request by the U.S. Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, day two will focus on strategy development for tribal fish and wildlife management legislation.

Those expected to attend include tribal policy makers, fish and wildlife committee members, fisheries program managers, students of Indian and environmental law, natural resource managers and decision makers, and representatives of local governments.
