Tribal fisheries co-managers
to gather at symposium
Portland, Oregon
- Tribal fisheries
co-managers from across the nation will meet in Portland next month
for a two-day symposium to discuss their ongoing research, policy
development and management programs, and share success stories.
The Tribal Fisheries Co-Management Symposium & Legislative Work Session,
co-sponsored by the Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission (CRITFC)
and the Institute for Tribal Government at Portland State University's
Hatfield School of Government, is 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, Jan.
30, and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31 at PSU's Smith Center.
Invited speakers: U.S. Sens. Daniel K. Inouye of Hawaii and Ben Nighthorse
Campbell of Colorado; Congressmen Dale E. Kildee of Michigan and J.D.
Hayworth of Arizona, former Oregon Congresswoman Elizabeth Furse,
and Billy Frank Jr., Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission chairman.
Open to the general public, the symposium's first day will showcase
the history, organization, authority and issues of CRITFC and other
inter-tribal organizations dedicated to fisheries management. Responding
to a request by the U.S. Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, day two
will focus on strategy development for tribal fish and wildlife management
legislation.
Those expected to attend include tribal policy makers, fish and wildlife
committee members, fisheries program managers, students of Indian
and environmental law, natural resource managers and decision makers,
and representatives of local governments.

The Portland-based Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission is
the technical support and coordinating agency for fishery management
policies of the Columbia River Basin's four treaty tribes: the Confederated
Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, the Confederated Tribes
of the Warm Springs Reservation of Oregon, the Confederated Tribes
and Bands of the Yakama Nation and the Nez Perce Tribe.
CRITFC, formed in 1977, employs biologists, other scientists, public
information specialists, policy analysts and administrators who work
in fisheries research and analyses, advocacy, planning and coordination,
