Holmes Property Acquisition and Restoration Project
The PCSRF helped fund the purchase of the Holmes Property, a 50-acre floodplain parcel that includes a productive side channel of the Yakima River mainstem. The entire property is within the Yakima River’s geomorphic floodplain. The property has a permanent conservation easement on the 37 acres that will be maintained as open space. Passive and active restoration will occur on that portion of the property, which is characterized as a wetland, floodplain area that has been grazed by livestock. A thin corridor of riparian vegetation has persisted along the stable side channel that bisects this portion of the property. Native fishes including spring Chinook and coho salmon have been observed spawning and rearing on the property. There have been various riparian planting outreach activities with the public.
