Springs Tribe Deschutes River Fall Chinook Tagging Project |
||||||
![]() The Warm Springs Tribe has installed over twenty miles of riparian exclosure fencing to prevent livestock from disturbing sensitive streambank areas. |
The Deschutes River fall Chinook are one of the three naturally spawning runs within the Columbia River upriver bright fall Chinook stock group. Upriver bright fall Chinook are a major contributor to Southeast Alaska and Canadian fisheries. In the spring of 2004, the Warm Springs Tribe marked and coded-wire tagged approximately 40,000 Deschutes River juvenile fall Chinook from the 2003 brood year. In 2005, the tribe conducted a modified two-event mark-recapture experiment to estimate the spawning abundance of the 2006 brood year. This data, combined with data from the juvenile tagging project, enabled the tribe to estimate total harvest, distribution, marine survival and exploitation rates for the Deschutes River fall Chinook. The results improved management of this stock. |
