Umatilla Native Plant Nursery Project

A modern "salmon-friendly" culvert was installed on Mission Creek, providing umimpeded access to approximately 3.4 miles of potential steelhead habitat.
The Umatilla Tribe operates the Tribal Native Plant Nursery to provide locally adapted plants for riparian restoration projects in the Umatilla, Walla Walla, John Day and Grande Ronde River basins. The Tribe utilizes passive techniques such as stream corridor fencing and native plantings to stop riparian degradation. Reestablishment of stable streambanks through improved agricultural practices coupled with planting of native vegetation has demonstrated that the riparian community recovery can occur. The availability of local stock or specialized plant species is best suited for survival at project sites. Most nursery plants are used for habitat enhancement projects that target spring Chinook and summer steelhead.
