![]() Helicopter outplanting coho salmon parr in the Clearwater River basin. |
Coho salmon were declared extinct in the Snake River basin in 1986. Because the coho salmon were a main food source, trade item and cultural resource for the Nez Perce, the tribe initiated a coho salmon restoration in 1997 by releasing 630,000 coho salmon parr (fingerlings) in five streams. The goal of the project is to restore coho salmon to sufficient numbers in the Clearwater River subbasin to support natural production, and tribal and non-tribal harvest. The steps involved in building a Clearwater River coho broodstock include spawning adult fish, rearing juveniles, and outplanting juveniles. The results of the reintroduction project are monitored so that operations can be adapted to optimize hatchery and natural production, and minimize ecological impacts. |
