Fishery Technician II/III

The Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission assists four tribes in the co-management of their treaty rights within the Columbia River Basin. The up to seven positions offered are associated with the Commission’s Fish Science Department. This research group is now engaged in several stock composition, identification, and structure investigations. As well as, involvement in describing, developing, and quantitatively evaluating restoration strategies for Pacific salmon. Specific areas of research include age, length and stock composition of Columbia River salmon and steelhead; sea lion enumeration, tracking and hazing; harvest evaluation; and habitat inventory and evaluation. The Technicians will be assigned to one or several of these projects and will work in both laboratory and field settings. The position is subject to availability of funds.

Position Details
Essential Job Functions
Specific duties of this position include, but are not limited to:
  1. Fish capture and identification, data collection, and biological sampling.
  2. Sea lion identification and hazing
  3. Salmonid habitat inventory and evaluation
  4. Data entry using commercial and custom computer applications.
  5. Operating a boat in large rivers.
  6. Enumerate salmon and lamprey by reviewing video
Job Requirements/Qualifications
  1. -An interest in fisheries science and experience collecting natural resource data in the field. A bachelor’s degree in fisheries or a related field will substitute for work experience.
  2. Familiarity with biological research, data analyses, and the ability to execute detailed technical procedures.
  3. Experience with computer applications and data management.
  4. Ability to work effectively, positively, and as a team in field, office, and laboratory settings.
  5. A valid driver’s license, good driving record, and the ability to lift and carry objects weighting at least 50 pounds.
Supervision Received
Supervised by Biologist/Project Leader
Supervision Given
May provide lead support to other technicians, but normally there is no supervisory responsibilities.
Working Conditions

Field activities may be in rough terrain, on or in rivers and watersheds, inclement weather, operating a boat in large rivers, lifting, pushing, pulling, etc, weights occasionally exceeding 50 pounds. Office and lab activities are in a general controlled office setting
