Sea lions and salmonThere is no single non-lethal deterrence method known to be universally effective in discouraging Pacific harbor seals and California seal lions from engaging in problem behaviors. Nevertheless, various methods and techniques have been found useful, in some circumstances, for deterring problem animals that are damaging property, fishing gear, or catch. The Washington and Oregon departments of fish and game, the US Corps of Engineers, and the Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission are authorized to use loud noise or pyrotechnics to deter or "haze" the problem sea lions.
