With no obstructions all the way to the Pacific Ocean, Willamette Falls on the Willamette River in Oregon City, Oregon is one of the last major lamprey harvest sites left in the Columbia River Basin. Tribal fishers from the Warm Springs, Yakama, and Umatilla tribes recently descended on the falls for the annual lamprey harvest. Harvesting earlier than normal because of low water levels this year, tribal members climbed over boulders and dove for the eels that would feed their families and support their communities. Under blue skies and the fall of the water, for a few hours tribal members harvested eels, just as their ancestors had done for thousands of years.
